Buprenorphine Treatment: Evidence from Research

Clinical Case Studies Involving Buprenorphine

• Buprenorphine is equally effective as moderate (60 mg per day) doses of methadone.
• Buprenorphine is mildly reinforcing, encouraging good patient compliance.
• After a year of buprenorphine plus counseling, as many as 75 percent of the patients have been retained in treatment compared to none in a placebo plus counseling condition.

Buprenorphine Treatment Led to Increased Retention

In two studies, individuals receiving buprenorphine treatment in in-patient (diamond symbols) and outpatient (square symbols) settings were retained at a higher rate over a 14-day period when compared to patients receiving clonidine.
